FULL Tascam Gigastudio 3 By DRPATJE: A Comprehensive Review of the Software Sampler
Tascam Gigastudio 3 is a software sampler that allows you to stream high-quality samples directly from your hard drive, without loading them into RAM. It offers 24-bit playback, real-time convolution processing, Rewire support, VST plug-ins, and much more. But is it worth the upgrade from previous versions? And how does it compare to other software samplers on the market? In this review, I will explore the features, performance, and sound quality of Tascam Gigastudio 3, and share my personal experience with using it for various music projects.
Features
Tascam Gigastudio 3 comes in three versions: Solo, Ensemble, and Orchestra. The main difference between them is the maximum polyphony, MIDI I/O, and bundled libraries. Solo offers 64 voices, one MIDI port, and 1GB of sounds; Ensemble offers 160 voices, four MIDI ports, and 4GB of sounds; and Orchestra offers 256 voices, eight MIDI ports, and 9GB of sounds. All versions support up to 32 audio outputs and can run as standalone applications or as Rewire slaves to other DAWs.

One of the most impressive features of Tascam Gigastudio 3 is the real-time convolution processing. This allows you to apply realistic reverb and other effects to your samples using impulse responses from various acoustic spaces and devices. You can choose from over 300 impulse responses included in the package, or load your own custom ones. You can also adjust various parameters such as wet/dry mix, pre-delay, decay time, EQ, and modulation. The convolution engine is very CPU-efficient and can handle up to eight simultaneous impulses per instrument.
Another feature that sets Tascam Gigastudio 3 apart from other software samplers is the VST plug-in support. You can insert up to four VST effects per instrument and up to four VST instruments per MIDI channel. This opens up a lot of possibilities for sound design and creative expression. You can use your favorite synths and effects alongside your samples, or layer them together for rich and complex sounds. You can also automate any VST parameter using MIDI controllers or envelopes.
Performance
Tascam Gigastudio 3 is designed to run smoothly on Windows XP with Service Pack 1 or higher. It does not support Hyperthreading, dual-processor machines, or 64-bit processors at this time. It also requires a fast hard drive with plenty of free space for streaming samples. The recommended system requirements are a Pentium 4 2GHz or higher CPU, 512MB or more RAM, a DirectX-compatible sound card with ASIO drivers, and a DVD-ROM drive for installation.
In my tests, I used a Pentium 4 2.8GHz PC with 1GB RAM and a M-Audio Delta 1010LT sound card. I installed Tascam Gigastudio 3 Orchestra on a separate hard drive from my system drive and loaded it as a Rewire slave to Cubase SX3. I was able to play back several instruments with convolution reverb and VST effects without any glitches or dropouts. The CPU meter showed around 50% usage on average. The latency was very low and the response was fast and smooth.
Sound Quality
The sound quality of Tascam Gigastudio 3 is excellent. The samples are crisp and clear, with a lot of detail and dynamics. The convolution reverb adds a lot of realism and depth to the sounds, especially for orchestral instruments. The VST plug-ins also enhance the sonic possibilities and allow you to tweak the sounds to your liking.
The bundled libraries are very good as well. They cover a wide range of genres and styles, from classical to pop to ethnic. Some of the highlights are the Vienna Symphonic Library Special Edition (orchestra), Garritan Personal Orchestra (orchestra), Sonic Implants Symphonic Strings (strings), Sonic Implants Symphonic Brass (brass), Sonic Implants Symphonic Woodwinds (woodwinds), Sonic Implants Symphonic Percussion (percussion), Ultimate Sound Bank Plugsound Box (synths), Ultimate Sound 29c81ba772
